A trap is set up in central locations within the field of heliconias to attract a large number of bugs and insects. The white PVC pipe is then smeared with various heliconia’s natural liquids to see which plants attract which insects. This helps the growers determine which chemicals should be used on which plants to protect them from being eaten or destroyed without overstepping their boundaries in an overuse of chemicals on the plants. Also, the reason for the use of a white PVC pipe is because insects and bugs alike are attracted to the white, which means that more insects are likely to stumble across this device allowing for further research findings.
